Eddie Garcia has been officially sworn in as the new police chief of Fort Worth, taking on the role as the city's 28th head of law enforcement. A ceremony held yesterday marked the start of his tenure in a position that commands oversight of 1,896 sworn officers and 574 professional staff members. Garcia, who arrives with a formidable reputation for initiating reforms and strengthening community relations, embarks on his latest challenge after being approved by the City Council and selected by City Manager Jay Chapa following a comprehensive search and interview process, reports the City of Fort Worth.

In remarks during the ceremony, Mayor Mattie Parker celebrated Garcia's arrival, stating, "It's an exciting day in Fort Worth." She added, "Chief Garcia, you’re inheriting an amazing police department. And we know you want to make it even better." Garcia's deep experience spans multiple decades, beginning in San Jose, California, followed by a tenure in Dallas, Texas. Beyond his role as a police chief, he served as an assistant city manager in Austin, Texas, a post in which he had strategic oversight of multiple public safety departments and initiated several progressive policing strategies, according to the City of Fort Worth.

A native of Puerto Rico, raised in San Jose's Berryessa neighborhood, Garcia overcame early life challenges, including language barriers and socioeconomic hurdles. These personal experiences are said to have crafted his empathetic approach to public service and his belief in creating opportunities for others. His tenure in San Jose notably included the implementation of an academy course titled "Policing in the Current Political and Social Climate" in collaboration with San Jose State University, a course designed to foster racial equity and understand the historical context of policing
