El Paso residents should keep their umbrellas close by over the next several days, according to the latest update from the National Weather Service (NWS). The forecast indicates that scattered showers and thunderstorms are quite possible into the early part of the week, with the highest chance of precipitation tonight at 70%. The predominantly cloudy skies will also usher in cooler temperatures, with today's highs near 83 degrees dropping slightly to the upper 70s by Sunday, according to the National Weather Service.

The NWS detailed forecast suggests that, after 1 p.m. today, we could see thunderstorms in addition to the scattered showers. The southeast wind will be mild, around 6 mph, in the afternoon. As we head into tonight, the chance of precipitation jumps to 70%, with the possibility of showers and thunderstorms increasing after 3 a.m. Some rainfall amounts may be less than a tenth of an inch; however, in thunderstorms, we could see higher amounts.

Looking ahead to Sunday, the forecast doesn't let up on the potential for wet weather, promising showers and possibly a thunderstorm with an 80% chance of rain. Steady east southeast winds will accompany the predicted high of 78 degrees. By Sunday night, while showers and potential thunderstorms are likely before midnight, there's also a chance of showers continuing after 3 a.m. The NWS expects a 60% chance of rainfall.

On Monday, the NWS forecasts a 20 percent chance of showers before noon, giving way to a mostly sunny day with highs around 81 degrees. The trend towards clearer skies and warming temperatures seems to set in from Tuesday, with a sunny high near 85 degrees, and the fair weather is poised to continue, with sunny forecasts and temperatures inching up towards the high 80s by Thursday.
