In a move to foster better understanding and inclusivity, El Paso Community College (EPCC) recently sponsored a distinctive event aimed at bringing attention to the daily experiences of the Deaf community. Held at Wine Down in East El Paso, this gathering served as a stage for both deaf individuals and hearing participants to engage in a shared dining experience, navigating an evening of communication without the reliance on spoken words.
The event, a first for the El Paso region, was facilitated by EPCC's Sign Language Program Lab Assistant, Christina Diaz, with the support of local businesses and the City of Socorro. According to EPCC News, the evening featured interpreters and interns from Inter American Interpreting to assist with communication. Notable guests such as the 2022 Mrs. Texas Earth Vanessa Tena, Socorro Mayor Rudy Cruz Jr., and Deaf leader Raul Luna, EPCC's American Sign Language and Interpreter Preparation Program Coordinator, were in attendance.
Highlighting the impact of such initiatives, EPCC News reports that Julio Loera Banuelas, a Deaf student and automotive mechanics major at EPCC, found the event to be an inclusive experience. "Julio Loera Banuelas, a Deaf student at EPCC who is majoring in automotive mechanics, stated that his experience at the event felt inclusive," Diaz commented. The event was also a learning opportunity for hearing participants, including Banuelas' mother, who left with a deeper comprehension of her son's everyday experiences.
An interesting addition to the event was a storytelling segment where individuals shared personal accounts of living with various levels of hearing loss, providing attendees with a unique perspective on the challenges faced by the Deaf community. Such narratives illustrated the spectrum of communication barriers and triumphs within the community. Meanwhile, the broad range of attendees, including students, military veterans, law enforcement officers, and educators, underscored the diverse impact of deafness beyond the individual. Encouragingly, public interest in the event was evidently high, with tickets selling out days before the function.
