An hours-long standoff in El Paso ended peacefully when an armed suspect surrendered to authorities following intervention by the Sheriff's Office SWAT and negotiation teams. Details of the event were provided in a social media post by El Paso County Sheriff Oscar Ugarte, who reported the arrest of 37-year-old Edward Moore. The incident, which began as a family violence call, unfolded on the afternoon of Wednesday, with deputies responding to the 600 block of Endwall Street after Moore's mother reported her son had assaulted her and was possibly armed, according to the Sheriff's Office Facebook page.
The situation escalated when officers learned Moore had an active protective order against him and was wanted on two outstanding criminal warrants for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Despite establishing a perimeter and attempting to make contact, Moore initially refused to surrender. A chemical agent eventually deployed by the SWAT team prompted Moore to exit his residence and surrender without further incident. After the standoff concluded with no injuries reported, Moore was booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility on charges of Aggravated Assault and Interference with an Emergency Request for Assistance, carrying a total bond set at $3,000.
The peaceful resolution to what could have escalated into a more violent confrontation highlights the effectiveness of law enforcement's negotiation strategies and non-lethal intervention tactics. The incident underscores an ongoing challenge that law enforcement faces: addressing volatile domestic situations where the potential for violence is high, and the stakes for all involved are potentially life-altering.
