The community has come together to honor the life and musical legacy of Connor Elliot Lopez, the 23-year-old classically trained pianist and teacher, who tragically lost his life in a motorcycle crash earlier this year. The incident occurred on April 23 at Sheldon Road and Lewis Stein Road, as reported by FOX40. A Celebration of Life event, honoring what would have been Lopez's 24th birthday last Thursday, was held yesterday from noon to 4 p.m. at 9950 Elk Grove Florin Road.
During the emotional gathering, the Connor Lopez Music Scholarship was awarded, a poignant tribute to the young artist's contribution to the musical fabric of Elk Grove. The scholarship, established in collaboration with NewSongs Music School, will provide opportunities for students passionate about music but lacking the means to pursue it. The scholarship fund was set up after a sting of grief to extend Lopez's love for music, with his family and friends advocating for increased motorcycle safety in the wake of their loss, urging others to "think before you turn," as per the account by KCRA.
Connor's mother, Allyson Lyman, has been vocal about the impact of her son's passing, stating, "Connor was the most incredible person," as she remembers his "warmth, humor, and kindness." The scholarship is meant to be a reflection of Connor's character, intended for a child who wouldn't otherwise have the opportunity, in consonance with what she believes "Connor would want," she told KCRA.
In remembrance of her brother, Lopez's sister commemorated him by describing how unlike some older brothers who "kind of roughhouse and bully you in a way," Connor always embodied kindness and was a supportive presence in her life. Besides celebrating his life through memories and granting opportunities to young musicians, the Lopez family is seeking justice, or rather accountability, for the tragic incident. "People should be held accountable when a life is taken and that's what we're hoping for Connor," Lyman emphasized in the KCRA interview.
The event also saw the attendance of Elk Grove's mayor, as noted by FOX40, and guests were treated to some of Lopez's favorite meals, including offerings from Taco Bell and Corona.
