Early this morning, tragedy struck Ewa Beach as a 23-year-old man perished in an e-bike collision, marking it the 57th traffic fatality on O‘ahu this year. The incident, which took place on Kuhina Street around 2:36 a.m., involved the motorcyclist traveling at a high rate of speed when he ultimately lost control and collided with an unattended parked vehicle, the Honolulu Police Department said, as reported by KHON2.
The road was closed for three hours between Hanakahi and Mailani Streets, later reopening after the completion of initial investigations. The Honolulu Emergency Medical Services confirmed the death of the young man, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident which could have played a role in the fatality, as per a report by KITV.
Further enhancing the gravity of the incident, this year's roadway death toll has dramatically increased from the 28 recorded at the same time last year. Hawaii News Now has illuminated this distressing statistic in its coverage. The Honolulu Police Department is still investigating the cause of the crash, and while they have established that speed was a decisive factor, it's not yet known if the influence of drugs or alcohol also played a part in the collision, police admitted.
