Drivers in Avery County should expect detours next week as N.C. Department of Transportation (NCDOT) continues construction of a new bridge over Elk River. The project replaces the previous bridge destroyed by Hurricane Helene.
According to the N.C. Department of Transportation website, daytime closures on Elk River Road near Falls Landing Lane will begin today and continue through Friday, while crews work on the bridge’s main support structure. Flaggers will direct traffic, but wait times may be extended, and non-local drivers are advised to consider alternate routes.
The $2.6 million project is being handled by James R. Vannoy & Sons Construction Company Inc., with completion expected in fall 2026.
