The skies over Yolo County are set to become a touch safer, thanks to a federal grant aimed at giving some much-needed TLC to the Yolo County Airport. The airport's General Services Department scooped up over $240,000 in Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) funds for essential planning and maintenance.
According to Yolo County's own website, there's $170,620 earmarked for planning how to fix the airport's runway and another $71,250 directed towards creating a Pavement Maintenance Management System (PMMS). Lucas Frerichs, from the Yolo County Board of Supervisors, was keen to underline the importance of these upgrades. "Improvements to the Yolo County Airport is an investment in our local economy and transportation infrastructure," he told the county's news page, adding that the funds will keep vital runway and pavement systems both safe and reliable for everyone.
The cash infusion will go straight to addressing the signs of aging and wear the runway has shown, including those pesky cracks and weathering that come with time and use. But don't expect a full rebuild – this project is all about those strategic fixes: sealing up cracks, swapping out troubled patches of pavement, and considering a seal coat for good measure. This isn't just about immediate fixes; it's planning for longevity, anticipating the needs of tomorrow's fliers.
New tools are coming into play as well, with the PMMS set to offer a full health check for airport grounds, taxiways, and other key areas. Ryan Pistochini, the Yolo County General Services Director, underscored the long-term benefits in a statement: "By planning for runway rehabilitation and updating our pavement management system, we’re ensuring the airport remains a strong community asset," he said, as mentioned on the county's official website. There is also discussion about securing additional funds from the California Department of Transportation's Division of Aeronautics—because who doesn’t like a financial boost?
If you aren't familiar with the Yolo County Airport, you should know it's not just another strip of tarmac. With history stretching back to its days as a U.S. Army Air Force training facility during World War II, it's been serving the region faithfully ever since it transitioned to county control. Today, apart from handling general aviation traffic, it houses enterprises like Woodland Aviation and SkyDance Skydiving – pillars of the local aviation community.
