Paul Renner, the former speaker of the Florida House of Representatives, has declared his candidacy for the state's gubernatorial race, setting his sights on the office currently held by Ron DeSantis. In his announcement, Renner leaned on his legislative track record and promises to continue in the vein of DeSantis' leadership. "As a legislator and Speaker of the House, I stood with Ron DeSantis to brand our state the Free State of Florida. I’m running for Governor so that when the DeSantis era comes to an end, we can defend our victories and solve the challenges that remain," Renner stated, as reported by ClickOrlando.
Having served in the Florida legislature from 2015 to 2024 and capping his career there as the Speaker from 2022-2024, Renner has been a significant figure in Florida politics. Now a member of the State University System Board of Governors, the former naval officer of 20 years, Renner's announcement signals his commitment to contest in the 2026 election, with DeSantis reaching his term limit after two terms, cited by WFTV.
As the political ground shifts, Renner prepares to confront his primary Republican opponent, Congressman Byron Donalds, who has already secured an endorsement from President Donald Trump. Renner's campaign also anticipates potential challenges from Democrat David Jolly and addresses the unconfirmed speculation about Florida's first lady, Casey DeSantis, possibly entering the race. Despite these contenders, Renner remains confident, broadcasting his readiness to tackle his political adversaries.
