
An explosion occurred at the Fiberon manufacturing facility in New London, Stanly County, last Friday evening, injuring four people. The incident happened just before 6 p.m. and prompted a large emergency response, according to WBTV. All employees were accounted for, and no life-threatening injuries were reported.
The Queen City News reported that the fire was under control by about 11:45 p.m. Emergency crews first arrived just before 7 p.m. Two injured individuals were taken to a local Atrium hospital, and two others were sent to Wake Forest Baptist Burn Center. The extent of their injuries has not been released.
According to WCNC, the New London Volunteer Fire Department led the initial response, supported by Bethany, City of Albemarle, Richfield-Misenheimer, Oakboro, and Monroe fire departments. The fire caused the temporary shutdown of the Fiberon facility, which manufactures composite materials for decks and railings.
The cause of the explosion is under investigation by the ATF, the NC State Bureau of Investigation, and the Office of the State Fire Marshal. The North Carolina Office of the State Fire Marshal is leading the investigation. The Queen City News reported that Fire Marshal Daniel Barham said there was significant damage to the building and related manufacturing equipment.
