A Gaston County man has been hit with multiple charges of insurance fraud, underscoring a continued vigilance against white-collar crime in North Carolina. Samuel Dwayne Collins, 53, of Gastonia, faces allegations of scheming to deceive Integon General Insurance Corp. by submitting altered documents to claim payouts he didn't rightfully earn.
According to the North Carolina Department of Insurance, between April 15 and May 6, Collins reportedly tweaked physical therapy receipts and doctored a physician's note in a bid to siphon funds from an insurance company. The charges include three counts of insurance fraud, two counts of attempting to obtain property by false pretense, and one count of obtaining property by false pretense.
Collins was slapped with criminal summonses on September 17, and is gearing up for a court appearance in Gaston County District Court, set for November 17. This case spotlights the enduring issue of insurance fraud, often seen as a "victimless" crime yet one with very real consequences -- higher premiums for the law-abiding policyholders.
North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey took the incident as an opportunity to urge locals to report any hints of insurance fraud. "Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime," Commissioner Causey expressed. "It hits all of us in the pocket through higher premiums." By casting a light on such schemes, authorities hope to temper the financial ripple effects that ultimately burden every insurance customer.
Commissioner Causey's stance puts emphasis on community involvement as an instrument for deterring such fraudulent activities. Citizens are encouraged to be vigilant and to assist in unburdening the system from those who would unjustly profit at the expense of others.
