Last Thursday, Gilroy Police officers were called to a scene that serves as a potent reminder of the risks law enforcement officers face daily. A 25-year-old man was found unresponsive in his vehicle at a local 7-Eleven, surrounded by drug paraphernalia. In the ensuing arrest for suspected drug possession, an unexpected turn of events led to one officer's exposure to what was believed to be fentanyl, a powerful and dangerous opioid.

According to a post from the Gilroy Police Department, officers arrived at the 7-Eleven on 1st Street around 5 AM after receiving reports. They found Keanu Castro, the man in question, and were in the process of helping him when the situation took a dangerous turn. During the incident, Castro attempted to hastily consume a bag containing a white substance, which he then proceeded to spit out after police intervention. This caused the substance, thought to be fentanyl, to inadvertently go airborne and come into contact with a patrol officer.

"Our officer was rushed to an area hospital for treatment and will fortunately be ok," the Gilroy Police Department shared in their social media statement. The dangers of fentanyl exposure are well-documented, as even a small amount can lead to severe health implications, including overdose and death. Quick action and emergency care helped to avoid a tragedy in this case.

The suspect, after being medically cleared, was booked into the Santa Clara County Jail. Castro is facing several charges that include suspicion of narcotics possession and a probation violation.
