On Monday, Texas Governor Greg Abbott appointed Colonel Kirk Peterson (Ret.) to the Texas Military Preparedness Commission, a move that aims to bolster the state's defense readiness and economic growth in military sectors. According to the Office of the Texas Governor's official announcement, Peterson will serve on the commission until February 1, 2031, focusing on the preservation and attraction of new military missions and assets in the state.
Colonel Peterson, calling Wichita Falls home, comes to the commission with a hefty resume that includes 30 years of service in the United States Air Force and his most recent business role as a partner at the Wichita Falls Chamber of Commerce, and throughout his military tenure he has handled a variety of responsibilities including acting as the deputy director of logistics, engineering, and force protection at the Headquarters Air Education and Training Command at Randolph Air Force Base. Alongside his career accomplishments, Peterson is no stranger to military and veteran organizations, being an active member of the Logistics Officer Association, the Military Officers Association of America, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Educationally equipped with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Ohio University and a master's degree in Management from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Peterson's academic background complements his practical experience, equipping him for the complex needs of the commission, whose aim is not just to maintain, but to grow Texas' military presence and the economic benefits that come with it. The Governor's office has expressed confidence in Peterson's ability to contribute greatly to these endeavors.
Peterson's appointment comes at a time when states are competitively positioning themselves as ideal locations for military expansion; and Texas with its significant military footprint already, hopes to further leverage that status, Governor Abbott in his appointment reasserts his commitment to sustaining the robust military-industrial ecosystem within the Lone Star State, which strategizes not merely maintaining current military installations but in attracting new business that align with defense interests. Peterson's extensive network and expertise in military logistics, the Governor’s office believes, position him precisely to advance these goals, advocating for the kind of growth that not only benefits the military but also brings jobs and business opportunities to Texas.
