In the wake of the violence at a Dallas ICE facility, Governor Greg Abbott issued a stern, unequivocal statement condemning the shooting that occurred on Monday. Abbott described the incident as "horrific" and extended his prayers to all those touched by the event, according to a release from his office.
The governor confirmed ongoing communication with federal officials, and pledged the full support of Texas state resources to bring those responsible to justice. "I have been in communication with federal officials and assured them, the State of Texas will provide all necessary resources to investigate this attempted assassination," Abbott affirmed. Moreover, he suggested that the incident would not deter enforcement of border security and immigration laws, asserting that Texas authorities will "continue our work with the Department of Homeland Security and ICE to arrest, detain, and deport any individuals in this country illegally — without interruption," as mentioned on the Office of the Texas Governor website.
Abbott's message reinforced the notion that peaceful discourse is a cornerstone of American society. He drew a stark contrast between the United States and nations where political violence occurs routinely. "America cannot and will not become a country prone to such violence," the governor stated as per the Office of the Texas Governor release, pointing to the peaceful transitions of power as a mark of the nation's strength and stability.
Calling out what he perceives as dangerous rhetoric on the political left, Abbott pressed for unity in the face of divisiveness. "The ongoing onslaught of violent and subversive rhetoric from the Left threatens to degrade the most prized and basic values our nation was founded upon and must be denounced at every turn," he argued according to the Office of the Texas Governor release. This call for the rejection of political violence and an appeal for solidarity was aimed at maintaining the country's commitment to law, order, and principles of freedom.
