Amid ongoing uncertainty surrounding national health care policies, Governor Kathy Hochul has introduced updated COVID-19 vaccine recommendations for New York residents of all ages. Developed in coordination with the Northeast Public Health Collaborative, the guidance aims to provide clear direction at the state level ahead of anticipated federal discussions.
Governor Hochul’s action is being presented as a public health measure aimed at reinforcing science-based guidance amid ongoing debate over federal health policies. The updated recommendations advise COVID-19 vaccination for a wide range of individuals, from children as young as 6 months to adults of all ages. The guidance places particular emphasis on vaccination for higher-risk groups, including pregnant and lactating individuals, as well as those who are immunocompromised. “Vaccines remain one of the strongest tools we have to safeguard our families and our communities,” Hochul said in a press release, as she announced the guidelines.
Under Governor Hochul’s directive, access to COVID-19 vaccines in New York has been expanded. Earlier this month, she signed an Executive Order authorizing pharmacists to both prescribe and administer the vaccines. The order is intended to maintain vaccine availability as the state works toward a long-term legislative solution in response to ongoing federal resistance related to immunization and healthcare policy.
The State is not relying solely on pharmacies for vaccine distribution. New York’s Health Commissioner, Dr. James McDonald, supported the governor’s position, stating, “Vaccines save lives, and this guidance ensures every New Yorker from our youngest children to those at highest risk has safe, reliable access to the COVID vaccine.” Additionally, the state issued guidance to insurers, urging them to maintain coverage for vaccines in accordance with the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommendations, strengthening efforts to ensure consistent vaccine access, according to the Governor's office.
