Arts and culture in New York are set to get a financial boost as Governor Kathy Hochul announces the availability of $80 million in state funding, aimed at nonprofit arts and cultural organizations. According to the official statement of the Governor's Office, this new pool of capital will be distributed through the New York State Council on the Arts Capital Projects Fund. With grant categories designed to cater to a range of needs, organizations of various sizes can look forward to investments that will help sustain and expand their offerings.

The fund has been divided into three distinct streams, offering Small and Midsized Capital Improvement Grants, Large Capital Improvement Grants, and Capital Design Grants for Arts and Culture. This plan not only builds on the previous $86 million awarded earlier this year, but it also extends the arm of support to community development and place-making. Governor Hochul emphasized the vitality of the cultural sector saying, "New York’s thriving cultural sector attracts global visitors, generates economic opportunity and strengthens our incomparable creativity, which makes us a global epicenter for tourism." She hopes these grants will help organizations to develop projects that will serve New Yorkers and visitors for generations, as noted by the Governor's Office.

Details about the grants reveal opportunities for a wide range of project sizes and scopes. Small and Midsized Capital Improvement Grants will target projects prioritizing accessibility and sustainability with awards up to $2 million, while Large Capital Improvement Grants focus on larger, impactful improvements with awards ranging between $2 million to $10 million. Furthermore, Capital Design Grants offer financial aid for the development of design documents, with up to a maximum of 50 percent of the design phase’s total cost potentially covered by the fund.

The application process for these grants has now been opened, with a submission deadline set for January 13, 2026. Applicants seeking large capital support must consult NYSCA Capital Projects staff prior to application to ensure alignment with program priorities. NYSCA's executive director, Erika Mallin, touted the lasting impact of these investments, "Capital projects transform cultural facilities into community catalysts, delivering economic and social benefits which far surpass the initial investment." State Senator Jose M. Serrano echoed these sentiments highlighting the substantial returns through tourism, education, and employment, as per the Governor's Office.

Since its inception in 2018, NYSCA's Capital Projects Fund has awarded 607 capital grants totaling over $300 million across the state. With 60 percent of the awards in FY 2025 going to organizations with budgets under $5 million, the reach of this program aims to be broad and inclusive, supporting a diverse array of cultural activities and organizations, and further securing New York State’s renown as a vibrant cultural hub.
