Arizona's mining community is set to welcome a new steward after Governor Katie Hobbs appointed Walter Lesley “Les” Presmyk as the State Mine Inspector. With a tenure that spans decades in the industry, Presmyk brings a wealth of experience to the role, which is integral to ensuring safety and legal compliance within the state’s mines. According to a release from the Governor's Office, Presmyk replaces Paul Marsh, who resigned on August 15.

Presmyk's background is highlighted by a Mining Engineering degree from the University of Arizona's College of Mines and significant professional roles, including over fifteen years at various Arizona mines and as the Principal Mining Engineer for Salt River Project. His commitment to the industry was further evidenced as he served on the Town of Gilbert Council from 1999-2011. "I am proud to appoint Les Presmyk to this important role," Governor Hobbs said, as per the Governor's Office.

For Presmyk, the appointment is a culmination of a long-held aspiration. "I want to thank Governor Hobbs for appointing me to the position of Arizona's State Mine Inspector," Presmyk expressed, acknowledging how much this role means to him personally. Despite its origins in an official election procedure, he insists his focus is strictly on the miners' welfare, not the politics. "It is all about ensuring that everyone who works at any of Arizona's mines are provided safe working conditions and return home at the end of every shift to their families," he told the Office of the Arizona Governor.
