The Gresham Police Department is set to enhance pedestrian safety with a special operation along 181 Avenue. The targeted area stretches between SE Division Street and NE Halsey Street, where both education and enforcement will come into play on the ever-important issue of pedestrian rights, as detailed in an announcement made available on the City of Gresham official website.
Happening from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, this safety effort will include clear warning signs for drivers entering the area. The goal is to remind drivers to follow pedestrian right-of-way laws. Drivers must stop for people waiting to cross or already crossing the street. Oregon law also requires drivers to stop if another car in a nearby lane is already stopped at a crosswalk, as per the City of Gresham.
The funding for this endeavor comes through a collaboration between Oregon Impact and the Oregon Department of Transportation, paving the way for such operations to highlight the interaction between pedestrians and vehicles. As outlined by the City of Gresham, grants such as these are indispensable in forging a safer community through practical strides in pedestrian education and legal enforcement. These rules come from Oregon laws ORS 811.028, which covers “Failure to Stop and Remain Stopped for a Pedestrian,” and ORS Chapter 814, which includes other pedestrian-related laws.
