Tomorrow marks National Coffee With a Cop Day, and the Hawai‘i Police Department is opening its doors—well, actually, its local coffee shops—to the public for a series of get-togethers designed to foster community relations. As per an announcement from the department, Hawaii residents can engage in casual conversation with their community policing officers at various venues across the island.
The events, which are free and devoid of any specific agendas or prepared speeches—aim to bridge gaps that often exist between law enforcement and the communities they serve; this initiative is part of the larger National Community Policing Week, first introduced in 2016. Participants can talk life, throw questions at officers, or delve into concerns specific to their neighborhoods. It's about getting face-to-face in a relaxed setting, and what's more laid back than a coffee chat?
For those interested in attending, the gatherings are spread out across multiple towns including Waimea, Honoka‘a, Kea‘au, Pāhoa, and Keauhou. There's an easy casual coffee brewing at places like Starbucks in Waimea, Tex Drive In in Honoka‘a, and Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf in Kea‘au with times early enough for the morning folks and late enough for those who hit snooze.
Waimea's Starbucks at Parker Ranch Center will welcome visitors from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., while at Tex Drive In, Honoka‘a's early birds can pop in as early as 7:00 a.m., and it doesn't wrap until 9:00 a.m., and if you're roaming Kea‘au, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf hosts its session at the same time. Those nearer to Pāhoa can hit Ainaloa Long House between 8:00 a.m. to 10 a.m., while in Keauhou, Peaberry and Galette beckon from the Keauhou Shopping Center for chats between 8:00 a.m. and 10 a.m. Each of these locations is gearing up to serve up coffee and a side of conversation, all in the spirit of community engagement.
