Over 300 eager young athletes took to the courts in Hawai‘i as the Hawai‘i Isle Police Activities League (HI-PAL) successfully held its annual Endless Summers Basketball Classic. The event, which ran from August 22 to 24, saw 32 teams competing fiercely across five divisions, according to an announcement by the Hawai‘i Police Department.
Varsity girls, intermediate girls, elementary girls, intermediate boys, and high school boys all had a chance to showcase their basketball skills, drawing teams from across Hawai‘i Island and beyond, creating an intense, action-packed weekend, and of course, with a large crowd cheering on each dribble and slam dunk, it made for a lively atmosphere, as reported by the Hawai‘i Police Department.
Team Ikehu clinched the title for the High School Boys division, while Team Westside secured victory in the Intermediate Girls category. Meanwhile, those in attendance witnessed the Team Kona Stingrays double triumph as they emerged victorious in both the Elementary Girls and Intermediate Boys brackets. "The participants were excited to play in this yearly tournament, which featured a large number of teams per bracket," Community Policing Officer Darren Abalos disclosed, noting the heightened enthusiasm, as stated by the Hawai‘i Police Department.
The HI-PAL program is not just about sports; it fosters a stronger bond between law enforcement and youth through mentoring and promoting values such as teamwork, citizenship, and responsibility, aiming to build a foundation of trust in the communities where these kids grow up, as mentioned by the Hawai‘i Police Department.
