As health policies continue to evolve across the country, Hawaii has taken a step to more closely align with its West Coast neighbors. The island state is now officially part of the West Coast Health Alliance, joining forces with Washington, California, and Oregon. This collaboration aims to uphold public health insights driven by evidence, not politics. In a joint statement, Governors Jay Inslee, Gavin Newsom, Tina Kotek, and Hawaii's own Josh Green emphasized their shared commitment. "We are proud to announce the state of Hawaii is joining the West Coast Health Alliance to uphold the scientific integrity of public health recommendations," they declared, as reported by the Governor's Office.

With the alliance now comprising these four states, they are set to quickly start coordinating their health guidelines. This effort will, in turn, offer residents science-based recommendations that they can consistently rely upon. "By joining the West Coast Health Alliance, we're giving Hawaii’s people the same consistent, evidence-based guidance they can trust to keep their families and neighbors safe," Governor Green told the West Coast governors' website. The Alliance also recognizes the autonomy of Tribes concerning vaccine services, affirming a respect for Tribal sovereignty.

The creation of the West Coast Health Alliance comes at a time when confidence in federal health guidelines is waning. With the dismantling of key advisory bodies and reduced transparency at the CDC, these states have felt the urge to take action. They have previously criticized Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s removal of all 17 members of the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, a move they saw as greatly detrimental to the nation's preparedness against health threats.

The West Coast Health Alliance advocates for policies steered by the most current scientific advice. "The absence of consistent, science-based federal leadership poses a direct threat to our nation’s health security," the Governor's Office stated. Through their partnership, the states hope to ensure that their public health strategies will continuously be based on the best available science.
