A vigil was held in Hazel Park for a mother and her young son who were killed. According to ClickOnDetroit, Linda Hill, aged 41, and her 12-year-old son Kardi Jackson were the victims of a double homicide that took place inside their home on Berdeno Avenue on Labor Day.
Family and friends gathered at Hazel Park Junior High School for a candlelight vigil, where they shared memories and called for justice. As reported by WXYZ, candles were lit in remembrance of the victims. Police stated that Hill and Jackson showed signs of "apparent trauma," though further details have not yet been released. The family continues to seek information as the investigation remains ongoing.
Further details of the event reveal that a 43-year-old man from Redford Township was arrested in connection with the killings. As stated in a FOX 2 Detroit report, the victims were discovered with their throats slashed.
Hazel Park's Superintendent Amy Wilcox, found the vigil moving and noted Kardi’s reputation as a wonderful young man. "Well I'll tell you what, when the balloons were, let go it was so incredibly moving and I thought about all my teachers and principals have talked about how wonderful of a young man he was," Wilcox said, as per report by WXYZ.
Following the arrest, family member Amber Fairfax noted that it marks the beginning of the legal process toward justice, in a statement obtained by WXYZ: "we do feel a little bit of relief but at the same time, we still lost two loved ones, and a child at that." The family, to help with expenses, has created a GoFundMe page in the wake of the incident.
