Los Angeles is in the midst of a searing heatwave, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a Heat Advisory that will remain in effect until 6 PM PDT today. According to the forecast, residents of the greater Los Angeles area, including downtown Los Angeles, Malibu, and Beverly Hills, can expect "hot daytime conditions with high temperatures of 96 to 107 degrees common, and warm overnight conditions," as stated on the NWS Heat Advisory.
The advisory underscores the heightened risk for heat-related illnesses, particularly for the vulnerable, including "the very young, the very old, those without air conditioning, and those active outdoors." Health officials advise the public to limit outdoor activities, particularly strenuous ones such as hiking, to the cooler early morning hours. Those remaining indoors should seek air-conditioned spaces during the peak heat of the day, and remember to check on relatives and neighbors who might be at risk. With the continued oppressive heat, there is a possibility that the advisory may extend through Wednesday.
Though a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms might bring some relief, mainly before 11 am, the day is forecasted to be mostly sunny with highs around 94, as reported by the National Weather Service. Evening temperatures are expected to dip to a low of around 71 with a 20 percent chance of showers before 11 pm. The rest of the week appears to show signs of reprieve from the intense heat, with temperatures gradually decreasing to the mid-80s by the weekend.
