The streets of Hickory are set to undergo heightened scrutiny as local police double down on traffic enforcement this month. Throughout September, the Hickory Police Department is implementing its P.A.C.T. initiative – Pay Attention in City Traffic – with a focused presence on Falling Creek Road NE. The aim of this crackdown is to quickly curb distracted driving, excessive speed, tailgating, and other violations that can lead to accidents and injuries.
According to an announcement posted on the city's official website, officers will be on the lookout for drivers who are not paying adequate attention to the road ahead. They particularly aim to deter people from sticking too closely to the vehicle in front. "Enforcement will focus on distracted driving, speeding, following too close and other traffic violations," the Hickory Police Department's statement said. Pedestrians are not left out of the safety conversation either; they're encouraged to utilize crosswalks, corners, and signaled crossings, while decking out in reflective wear during the night for enhanced visibility.
Motorists, in turn, are being reminded of their obligation to be aware of and yield to pedestrians, who are most vulnerable at crosswalks, intersections, and any other designated crossing zones. And it’s not just those on foot; cyclists, too, are under the safety spotlight. The Hickory Police Department's statement advises drivers to "look for and yield to pedestrians, particularly at crosswalks and other designated crossings, as well as at all intersections" and they should "remember to look for pedestrians while turning."
Vehicles with two wheels are, after all, still vehicles in the eyes of the law, expected to follow the same traffic regulations as their four-wheeled companions – this includes riding in the correct direction and obeying signals like traffic lights or stop signs. The call for vigilance extends beyond drivers to encompass all those who use the roads of Hickory. "All citizens utilizing City of Hickory roadways are asked to remain alert and obey all traffic laws to ensure the safety of all motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians," underlines the Hickory Police Department's statement.
