In a high-speed chase that took place over the weekend, Stanislaus County Sheriff's Deputies have made an arrest following a risky pursuit that began on Highway 99. The Sheriff's Office reported in a Facebook post that the ordeal started when a vehicle, clocked at speeds breaching 100 miles per hour, was noticed zooming through Merced County and continued into Stanislaus County.
The pursuit, which started around 2:00 p.m. last Sunday, resulted in the suspect crashing into an unoccupied vehicle after refusing to stop for a deputy who had engaged emergency lights and siren. The suspect, identified as Cory Chance, a 33-year-old from Everett, Washington, attempted to evade the authorities on foot, darting beneath a parked truck before he was spotted by the Sheriff's Office unmanned aerial system (UAS).
Thanks to the swift collaboration of various law enforcement agencies, including the CHP - Modesto, Ceres Police Department, and Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office, a coordinated effort led to Chance's capture. The UAS played a crucial role in guiding ground units to the hiding suspect, ensuring his quick apprehension without incident.
Chance has been booked on serious charges, including three felony counts of evading a peace officer and one misdemeanor count of fleeing the scene of a crash. The importance of interagency cooperation was stressed by the Sheriff's Office, which applauded the "teamwork helped bring this dangerous pursuit to a safe conclusion and removed a reckless individual from our roadways."
