In Del Rio, Texas, a Honduran man with a criminal history has been sentenced to 21 months behind bars for illegal re-entry into the United States. Neri Farid Ardon-Calix, who is 30, was discovered stowing away in a railcar by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents close to Eagle Pass on January 13, as mentioned by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas.
Prior to his latest arrest, Ardon-Calix had been deported following a 2023 conviction for sexually assaulting a child in Houston. His criminal record, notwithstanding his age, landed him a two-year prison term. Upon being caught this January, he pleaded guilty on April 23 to the charges of illegal re-entry.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas, during the sentencing on September 11, U.S. District Judge Ernest Gonzalez did not mince words. "Ardon-Calix was a danger to the community," he stated, highlighting the threat the convicted criminal posed. This instance brings into focus the ongoing challenges facing the U.S. immigration system and border security operations.
U.S. Attorney Justin R. Simmons, overseeing the legal proceedings, led the announcement of the sentencing. In the team that brought Ardon-Calix to justice, Assistant U.S. Attorney Daisy Gonzalez, having expertly navigated the intricacies of the case, took the helm in prosecution. Their efforts underscore a message of rigorous enforcement when it comes to U.S. immigration laws.
