Following the tradition of several major cities, Honolulu will be joining Boston and New York City in paying homage to the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Mayor Rick Blangiardi announced that tonight, Honolulu Hale and the Neal S. Blaisdell Arena will be illuminated in blue. The lighting is intended to mark the nearly 3,000 lives lost on that day.

"Honolulu stands with cities everywhere in honoring the memory of all those we lost on September 11th, as well as the courage of the first responders and the enduring spirit of the American people," said Mayor Blangiardi, according to a statement publicized by the City and County of Honolulu's official website. The tribute will begin at sunset and continue through the evening to honor the memories of those connected to Hawaii.

The city will also be hosting the Mayor’s Remembrance Ceremony outside Honolulu Hale at the Eternal Flame to directly engage the public in the act of remembrance. All attendees are invited to join in contemplation and recollection, as noted by the city's announcement.
