In a stunning court decision, Melissa Towne, the Houston-area mother who confessed to fatally stabbing and suffocating her 5-year-old daughter in October 2022, has been found not guilty by reason of insanity. The grave incident took place at Spring Creek Park near Tomball where Towne attacked her daughter, Nichole Bradshaw-Towne. Following the attack, she drove the child to an emergency room where she was pronounced dead. KHOU 11 reported that the judge made the ruling after hearing evidence, with the trial originally set to start on September 9.
Towne's heinous actions were driven by her delusional belief that her daughter was "evil" and comparable to "Chuckie" from horror movies, this, according to court records. CPS records indicated that Nichole, at various times, showed signs of neglect and possible abuse, including being "covered in scars and insect bites and smelled of urine," as reported by KHOU 11.
During the tragic sequence of events at the park, court documents revealed that Nichole pleaded with her mother, saying, "I've been good," as Towne instructed her daughter to get on her knees before she commenced the attack. Despite the young girl's efforts to survive, Towne overpowered her, placing a plastic bag over her head and sustained pressure until Nichole's life was extinguished. In a startling discovery, a nurse found the young girl unresponsive inside Towne’s vehicle, with visible cuts on her neck. "Towne then reportedly drove to a nearby hospital and asked for a wheelchair because her daughter was hurting," according to a statement obtained by Click2Houston.
The case is now closed after Towne was found not guilty following a ruling on September 22 that she was not mentally fit to stand trial. Towne’s mental health struggles and past involvement with Child Protective Services are raising concerns—especially since Child Protective Services is still investigating whether she can safely care for her children. Towne has three other kids, ages 2 to 18. Child Protective Services first got involved in 2017 due to worries about her untreated schizophrenia and the safety of Nichole's newborn sibling, as reported by KHOU.
The father of the slain child, who was not living with Towne at the time of the murder, mourned the loss of the "sweetest little girl who never met a stranger," his daughter remembered for her love, giggles, and bright blue eyes filled with curiosity, as per KHOU.
