In a major operation that underscores the ongoing battle against international gang activity, ICE Philadelphia has successfully extradited Jose Alberto Zamora-Zamora, a top-ranking MS-13 gang leader, back to El Salvador. Known by his street moniker "Pirana," Zamora-Zamora, 31, was previously serving a prison sentence in the U.S. for unlawful reentry after an earlier deportation and now faces charges for a laundry list of violent crimes in his home country, including but not limited to aggravated homicide, kidnapping, and involvement in terrorist activities, as reported by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The capture and removal of Zamora-Zamora represent a concerted effort by multiple agencies cementing ICE's key role in the protection of public safety, both domestically and cross-border, he had been housed at the Federal Correctional Institution Allenwood Low in Pennsylvania serving a 24-month sentence before ERO Philadelphia took him into custody coordinating closely with ERO New Orleans, the U.S. Marshals Service, INTERPOL, and ICE’s Assistant Attaché for Removals in El Salvador for the operation. Zamora-Zamora's track record of illicit reentry into the United States serves as a glaring testament to his blatant disregard for the country's legal framework, coming back after earlier removal, which occurred in December of 2022.
Over in El Salvador, Zamora-Zamora's reputation precedes him; he is listed amongst the country's top 100 most wanted.
