An incarcerated woman, 31 years old, was pronounced dead after experiencing a medical emergency at Maple Street Correctional Center yesterday, according to a press release from the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office. Sheriff's Office personnel began life-saving efforts after the medical event was reported at around 6 AM in a general population pod. The woman had been checked with the rest of her housing unit briefly before the incident occurred.
The on-site medical team was assisted by fire and EMS personnel, who also responded to the emergency call at the correctional facility. Despite the swift reaction, the resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful, and the woman was declared deceased at the scene. Three agencies, including the San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office, the Coroner’s Office, and the Sheriff’s Office Investigations Bureau, are conducting independent investigations, as detailed by the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.
In light of the incident, the Coroner's Office is working on identifying the deceased and notifying the next of kin. Once these notifications are complete, her identity will be publicly shared. Furthermore, the cause of death will ultimately be determined by the Coroner’s Office. As mandated under state law, the Board of State and Community Corrections has been notified about the in-custody death.
