The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office has made public the details and a video of an officer-involved shooting that took place on August 25, where 37-year-old Cale Tyler Gilbert was killed. The incident unfolded at Dutton Island Preserve, where, according to the Sheriff's office, Gilbert reportedly began firing a rifle into the water.
A couple fishing nearby confronted Gilbert, which led to an altercation. Gilbert chased the couple as they tried to leave, and a car accident ensued: he sideswiped their truck and collided with another vehicle before crashing into a tree, as per the official report. A standoff followed, with Gilbert barricaded inside his vehicle. Police, led by Officer Soucek, used a public address system in an attempt to resolve the situation peacefully. The standoff lasted approximately ninety minutes.
At 7:34 p.m., officers perceived Gilbert reaching for his rifle case, which prompted a response from nine officers who opened fire and fatally struck him. The officers involved were identified as Boyster, Rickertson, Yanuzzi, Sapp, Robinson, Soucek, Henning, Ross, and Slatowski. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office stated that the incident will undergo a thorough review by the State Attorney's Office to determine the legality of the officers’ actions, followed by an internal JSO review and a Response to Resistance Board proceeding.
The sheriff's office has expressed their intention for transparency by releasing this information and the associated videos, which they caution contain graphic content and are intended for mature audiences with educational purposes in mind.
