Jacksonville police converged on a Downtown apartment building Monday afternoon after witnesses reported that a fight between two people turned into gunfire at the corner of Ashley and Julia streets. Officers established a heavy presence outside the residential tower as detectives worked to piece together what happened.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is investigating the reported shooting, according to News4JAX, which reported that witnesses described a dispute between two people that led to gunfire near the intersection. The outlet said it plans to update its report as more information becomes available, and police have not publicly identified any suspects or confirmed injuries.
The apartment building where officers gathered is the Residences at City Place, a 17-story residential condo tower at 311 W. Ashley St. that was originally constructed in 1949, according to background from Downtown Vision, Inc. The corner sits in the heart of Downtown Jacksonville, a dense mix of residential high-rises and commercial storefronts.
A Corner With a Violent History
This is not the first time gunfire has erupted at this exact intersection. In May 2023, JSO investigated a fatal shooting near the same corner, where a 39-year-old man was killed behind a dumpster on West Ashley Street near Julia Street, per Action News Jax. The recurrence of gun violence at the same block underscores lingering safety concerns for residents and visitors passing through the area.
Monday's incident also comes just over a week after a separate downtown shooting nine days earlier, on August 22, in the 800 block of West Forsyth Street, which left a man in his 20s critically injured, as Hoodline previously reported. That case, too, remained under investigation with no publicly confirmed suspects.
Citywide Homicides Down, But Downtown Incidents Persist
The Ashley Street report lands against a backdrop of an overall decline in Jacksonville violence this year. JSO recorded 27 homicides citywide through late June 2026, compared to 48 during the same period in 2025, according to statistics reported by News4JAX. Official Jacksonville Sheriff's Office open data show 43 total homicides citywide through late August 2026, comprising 38 murders, two manslaughters, and three justifiable homicides.
Even with that citywide drop, localized disputes in the downtown core continue to draw heavy police responses, as Monday's scene at Ashley and Julia streets illustrates. West Ashley Street itself carries deep historical weight in the city: it served as the primary commercial and cultural artery of Jacksonville's LaVilla neighborhood and was the first street in the city's Black neighborhoods to be paved, according to Downtown Jacksonville.
Surveillance Tools and Potential Charges
Detectives investigating the shooting may be able to draw on the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office's Connect Jacksonville program, which has integrated 6,776 registered private and public security cameras into a central transparency portal to assist real-time crime investigations. Whether cameras near Ashley and Julia streets captured the reported altercation has not been confirmed by police.
Should investigators identify a shooter, Florida law lays out a range of potential charges depending on the circumstances. Knowingly discharging a firearm in a public place or on a paved public street is a first-degree misdemeanor under Florida Statute § 790.15, carrying up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine. Firing or brandishing a weapon during a dispute can also be charged as aggravated assault with a deadly weapon under Florida Statute § 784.021, a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison. No charges have been announced in connection with Monday's incident.
