The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office is mourning the loss of one of its own, Canine Maro, a devoted member of the force who passed away due to a medical issue, according to an announcement made on the department's Facebook page. The beloved K-9 served with distinction for nine years since joining the team in 2016.
Serving until his last moments at home with his family, Maro was more than a police canine; he was a partner and friend to Deputy Scott Burkard and a familiar, friendly face to the people in the community. Throughout his career, he honed his skills, including tracking missing persons, apprehending suspects, and narcotics detection. Also, with a disposition that radiated beyond his duty, Maro was embraced as a playful and affectionate "four-legged teddy bear" who had a soft spot for children and enjoyed their affections.
"With heavy hearts, we announce the death of Canine Maro. He passed away at home last night with his family, from what is believed to be a medical issue," the Sheriff's Office shared in a heartfelt tribute.
Deputy Burkard, along with his family, is undoubtedly feeling the void left by Maro's absence, as are many in Jefferson County, who had witnessed his contributions firsthand. The Sheriff's Office expressed their collective sentiment, saying, "Our hearts go out to Deputy Burkard and his family." As the county bids farewell to Maro, they reflect on the joy and security he brought into the lives of many. "We'll miss you, Maro. Thanks for being such a good boy," the statement concluded, paying homage to a loyal and cherished companion.
