
Johnson City Police Department officers were recognized during a public ceremony. Officer Mitch Peters received the Silver Cross, and Officer Jonathon Workman received the Medal of Distinguished Service. The awards were given for their actions during an incident on March 12, according to the City of Johnson City.
The ceremony described how Officer Workman quickly helped his injured colleague. "I was giving Officer Workman information involving a call for service. I heard someone screaming," quoted Watch Commander Capt. Mark Hollis in the city’s news release. After Officer Peters was shot, Officer Workman pulled him to safety, applied a tourniquet, and assisted in the response to apprehend the suspect, as reported by the City of Johnson City.
The Johnson City Police Department presented Officer Mitch Peters and Officer Jonathon Workman with two of its top awards. Peters received the Medal of Distinguished Service, which recognizes exceptional courage in protecting human life. Workman received the Silver Cross, awarded to officers who sustain serious injuries from hostile actions involving deadly weapons. Hollis stated, “Officer Workman displayed courage, professionalism, and composure under extraordinary circumstances.” Chief Billy Church said, “The City of Johnson City can be proud knowing the JCPD is staffed by officers like Mitch Peters and Jonathon Workman,” as mentioned by the City of Johnson City.
