LAFD Extinguishes Fire in Downtown LA Recycling Yard; No Injuries Reported

Firefighters responded promptly to a structure fire reported on September 16th, inside a Downtown recycling yard located at 2201 E Washington Bl. The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) released a report stating that initial sightings of moderate smoke arose from a "large (approx 200' x 200') metal clad building," as noted in the initial LAFD alert. Crews arrived on the scene at around 6:04 PM and requested additional resources to engage in an offensive attack against the fire.

Shortly after the first responders' arrival, a revised LAFD update revealed that the actual fire was concentrated in a "Large (approximately 100' x 50') debris pile burning in the metal clad building." The report praised the fire sprinkler system for holding the blaze in check, thus preventing it from spreading extensively to other parts of the structure. This additional task force was quickly requested, with multiple firefighter units, including E14, T15, and others, joining the battle against the flames as reported in the follow-up update.

The LAFD achieved a knockdown of the fire at 6:36 PM, as the active flames were extinguished, but they continued to address smoldering hot spots within the large debris pile. The fire was confirmed to be contained within the debris pile, sparing the metal clad storage building of any significant damage. To fully extinguish the remnants of the blaze, heavy equipment operators were enlisted, indicating an operation of extended duration. According to the LAFD's knockdown announcement, there were no injuries reported at the scene.

The incident, with Incident Command #1569, summoned an impressive array of resources, involving engine companies, task forces, and battalion chiefs, among others, all coordinated by the Central Bureau and Council District 14. The exact cause of the fire remains to be determined, but the rapid response and strategic efforts of the LAFD crews successfully minimized damage and prevented potential casualties. Ongoing investigations and cleanup efforts are expected to continue in and around the affected area to ensure community safety and the return to normal operations at the recycling yard.
