The Lakewood City Council is calling for civic-minded residents to step up and serve their community by participating in local governance through various board and commission positions. According to a recent announcement, passionate volunteers are sought for the Complete & Active Streets Education & Advisory Board (CASE), Planning Commission, and Tree Advisory & Education Board to help steer the direction of city development and sustainability efforts.
In an effort to address traffic safety and encourage a shift towards more sustainable transportation options, the city has introduced CASE, a new board with five openings for individuals dedicated to the Active Transportation Plan and Safe Streets for All Plan, the recruits for this board will bring a range of perspectives from different modes of transit, their backgrounds a tapestry of the city's mobility challenges and triumphs. The volunteers are expected to contribute towards raising awareness and collaborating on traffic safety issues within Lakewood.
Furthermore, the Planning Commission is seeking a single new member with expertise in zoning, land use, and development—a critical voice in shaping the city's future infrastructural landscape. This role calls for a commitment of up to five hours per month, working closely with both the Planning Department and the Lakewood City Council to review and provide recommendations on public improvement proposals.
The Tree Advisory & Education Board also has one position available for an advocate for urban forestry, someone who will work alongside the city to achieve its tree canopy goals and spread knowledge about the benefits of private property tree planting, understanding that trees are essential not just for beauty but as the silent sentinels bearing witness to our efforts in environmental conservation. Those with a green thumb or a particular penchant for arboriculture are specifically encouraged to apply, helping to educate residents on responsible tree stewardship.
Interested individuals looking to make an impact on Lakewood’s community can find additional details and application instructions for all three opportunities on the city's official website at the Lakewood City Council’s Boards and Commissions Page. Roles are open to residents with varied experiences, and the city values diverse perspectives that can enrich the development and implementation of its plans for a forward-thinking and inclusive future.
