In recognition of the critical issue of rail safety, the Las Cruces Police Department has partnered with Operation Lifesaver Inc. and other industry leaders during "See Tracks, Think Train" week, which commenced on September 14th. The initiative, which runs through September 20th, aims to inform the public about the dangers associated with railroad crossings and to dispel practical advice to help avoid accidents and fatalities.

In an alarming statistic shared by the Las Cruces Police Department, a person or vehicle is hit by a train approximately every three hours in the United States. "Always stay alert" and "watch and listen for trains" are among the safety tips they have publicized to reduce this number. Furthering these efforts, the city's police force, alongside the rail industry, is seeking to more effectively educate the public during this designated safety week, according to the City of Las Cruces.

A set of guidelines for the public's adherence includes the clear directive to never walk, play, or stand near railroad tracks, as well as advisories against attempting to board moving trains or circumvent crossing gates. Las Cruces officials also emphasized the importance of noting blue-and-white signage, flashing lights, and gates when approaching rail crossings.

Moreover, particular caution was advised for drivers of buses and vehicles carrying hazardous materials, as they are required by law to fully stop before crossing railroad tracks. The police department urges the general public to similarly slow down and prepare to promptly stop at all crossings. It's also advised to always be ready to call 911 if one's vehicle becomes stuck on a track or if damage to rail infrastructure is observed.
