A Las Vegas man faces charges after allegedly leaving his dog outside in extreme heat, resulting in the animal's death, before dumping the body by a dumpster. Darrion Lamar Garry, 33, is accused of the neglectful act, which occurred during high temperatures reaching 108 and 109 degrees. According to an arrest report obtained by 8 News Now, Garry was playing video games while the French Bulldog, named Louie, was outside without proper shade or cooling.
Police were alerted to the situation on July 11 after a 911 call reported a deceased dog in the 2600 block of Valley Street. Surveillance video of the area showed two men, one of whom was wearing an orange reflective vest, dragging a kennel covered with a white sheet towards a dumpster. The footage indicated that the dog was already dead at the time, since there was no movement inside the kennel. The police were able to quickly identify Garry as a suspect, partly because the reflective vest matched the one required by his employer at an event production staffing company, as noted in a report by KTNV.
DNA evidence further linked Garry to the crime and confirmed his responsibility for the animal's death. In his statement to police, Garry claimed he was gifted the dog after being released from prison in October 2024 and that he usually checked on him after coming home from work. However, on the days leading up to the dog's death, he failed to provide Louie with adequate care or attention despite the scorching heat. The necropsy report classified the dog's death as suspected non-accidental and highlighted severe neglect.
Following the death of the dog, Garry admitted in an interview with police that he had covered the kennel with a sheet before heading to work, already aware that Louie was deceased. Faced with the grim task later that day, he sought help to quickly dispose of the body, leaving it near a dumpster. He said he was "sorry for his behavior," and acknowledged that he "should've taken better care of the dog," as per the detailed account from 8 News Now. Garry has since been charged with willful/malicious/torture/maim/kill an animal and was released after posting a $3,000 bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for October 30.
