The City of Lawton is gearing up for an election that could chart a new course for city governance, with citizens set to vote on two pivotal City Charter amendments and council representatives in wards 3, 4, and 5. The amendments in question aim to reshape how the city operates, with the "True North Culture Statement" intended to guide officials in their decision-making and a proposed change extending the probationary terms for city employees from six months to an entire year, as reported by the City of Lawton.
According to the City of Lawton's official announcement, the addition of the True North Culture Statement to the City Charter is envisioned as a compass for both present and future city officials, ensuring that the ethos of the city is consistently reflected in their actions and policies. The alteration in probationary periods for city workers is intended to grant supervisors a longer timeline to assess employee performance and foster their long-term contribution to the city's fabric.
The upcoming vote will not only determine the fate of these amendments but also who will take the helm in city council seats for Wards 3, 4, and 5. The roster for Ward 3 includes Kirby Brown, Paul Greene, and Charlie Pulliam. Ward 4's list of candidates features incumbent George Gill facing Andrew Norris, Tiffiney Dimery, David Stebleton, and Ronald Ballew. The Ward 5 election pits incumbent Allan Hampton against David Burkett, as detailed by the City of Lawton.
On September 9, from the strike of 7 a.m. to the close of 7 p.m., the polls will welcome voters who will have the power to influence the direction of their local government. While all registered city voters can cast their ballots on the charter amendments, only those residing in the specific wards will lay claim to their new council representatives, as per the City of Lawton.
