Residents of Lewisville are gearing up for an urban transformation as National Parking Day makes its return this month. According to the City of Lewisville, the event is set for Friday, Sept. 19, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the parking lot in front of the Next Steps Center. What's usually a space for parked cars will become a temporary community park where locals can socialize, picnic, and participate in organized activities.
Among the free activities scheduled is a tai chi class from 11 to 11:30 a.m., followed by a yoga class from noon to 12:30 p.m. These classes are just a glimpse of what's in store, with additional programming slated to cater to people of all ages throughout the duration of the event. It's a unique opportunity to reimagine the use of a concrete space, turning a mundane parking lot into a zone of leisure and social interaction.
National Parking Day serves as a local complement to Park(ing) Day, a wider initiative aimed at sparking conversations about urban design and the allocation of public space. Starting in San Francisco in 2005, as per a backgrounder on the event, Park(ing) Day has burgeoned into a global phenomenon. On the third Friday of every September, cities worldwide see metered parking spots converted into parks, art exhibits, and sites for community gatherings.
