The City of Long Beach is preparing for the 41st Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day on Sept. 20, inviting community volunteers to help remove trash from local beaches. The Department of Parks, Recreation and Marine (PRM) is seeking participants to join the cleanup from 9 a.m. to noon at sites including Junipero Beach, Belmont Pier, Peninsula, Mother's Beach, and Alamitos Bay Marina, according to a statement from the City of Long Beach.
Mayor Rex Richardson emphasized the community spirit of the coastal cleanup, stating, "Small actions can make lasting positive environmental impacts." He noted the event offers residents a chance to help preserve and beautify Long Beach’s shoreline. Volunteers are encouraged to pre-register or sign up on-site. Gloves and trash bags will be provided, though participants are urged to bring reusable supplies such as buckets and grabbers to reduce waste, as detailed by the City of Long Beach. Parking fees will be waived at the nearest beach lot for volunteers.
Last year’s cleanup drew over 1,600 volunteers who collected more than 1,900 pounds of debris in just three hours, according to the El Dorado Nature Center. This year’s effort continues that momentum with an educational focus, providing materials on the impact of marine debris and promoting long-term environmental stewardship. Support at cleanup sites will come from partners including the El Dorado Nature Center, Los Angeles Waterkeeper, Aquarium of the Pacific, Algalita, and the Seal Beach Yacht Club.
