Colorado's own Lt. Governor Dianne Primavera has been recognized for her remarkable contributions to public service and volunteerism with the State Service Leadership Award from America's Service Commissions (ASC), per the Colorado Governor's Office. The award applauds state leaders who demonstrate innovative strategies to leverage national service in addressing urgent community needs.
Primavera's dedication to furthering AmeriCorps initiatives within Colorado has been noted as a pivotal force behind the expansion of service programs across the state, targeting areas such as mental health and wildfire mitigation. According to the Colorado Governor's Office, Primavera stated, "AmeriCorps changes lives, not just for the individuals who serve, but for the countless families and communities whose needs are met through that service." Despite the honor, she deflected acclaim onto the AmeriCorps members, acknowledging their hands-on work towards building a stronger future.
Since taking office, Primavera has united with Serve Colorado, the Governor's Commission on Community Service, to bolster AmeriCorps programming in the state, driving initiatives that align volunteers with service opportunities, thus also forwarding workforce development. Notable accomplishments under her leadership include the inception of the Colorado COVID Containment Response Corps and the new Youth Mental Health Corps, which provide AmeriCorps members with valuable professional experience while addressing community health concerns.
This year, Primavera rose to the occasion when the federal government cut more than $400 million in AmeriCorps grants, promptly organizing a response to protect service terms for AmeriCorps members in Colorado, she rallied statewide officials, led advocacy to Congress, and conducted a coordinated media approach. Kaira Esgate, CEO of America's Service Commissions, commended her, stating, "Lt. Governor Primavera has been a true champion for national service and volunteerism," according to the Colorado Governor's Office.
