In an act that reminds us yet again of the inherent risks of outdoor adventure, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's Search and Rescue (SAR) team executed a precision operation on Mount Charleston this past Thursday. A hiker near Cathedral Rock found themselves in dire need after sustaining a lower leg injury. The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's Search and Rescue detailed the event in a recent social media post.

The operation unfolded on Tuesday, when SAR personnel aboard their helicopter, AIR1, were called out at approximately 11 a.m. Before their arrival, the Mount Charleston Fire & Rescue (MCFR) team had already made ground contact with the casualty, beginning immediate treatment of the injury. According to the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's account, "A single rescuer was inserted via hoist to the scene where they packaged the victim in a hot seat for extraction."

Upon packaging the hiker safely, AIR1 returned overhead to extract both the rescue worker and the injured party using a hoist. The transition from the rocky crags of Mount Charleston to the security of modern medicine was swift, with the victim being ferried to the USFS helipad. From there, the subsequent transfer to a ground ambulance was executed, ensuring the injured individual arrived at a local hospital for the necessary care.
