The Mankato Department of Public Safety recently released a social media update detailing their traffic enforcement efforts for the month of August. Keeping the streets safe, their officers made a total of 394 traffic stops which resulted in 174 citations. The numbers, available on the department's Facebook page, also include 13 arrests for driving while intoxicated (DWI), with the highest recorded blood alcohol content (BAC) reaching 0.28.
Exceeding the speed limit by significant margins, the fastest speeds detected during the stops were 91 mph in a 65 mph zone, 67 mph in a 30 mph zone, and 85 mph in a 50 mph zone. With speeds like this, it was clear that the risk posed to everyone on the road was not elusive. Mankato police are urging the public to "watch your speed," "drive sober," and "stay alert behind the wheel," to improve the collective safety of the community.
Speeding, especially at the rates highlighted by the department, can lead to severe consequences, both legally and physically. The statistics from August show a concerning trend that the department is actively trying to curb. Speeding citations accounted for 39 of the total citations issued, signifying a persistent issue with drivers ignoring speed limits.
In August's enforcement highlights, the Mankato Department of Public Safety affirms its commitment to diligence in reducing hazardous driving behaviors. Despite their efforts, achieving safer roads is also dependent on drivers taking the responsibility to adhere to the rules. The department's fight against the peril that can be as simple to address as obeying the posted speed limit signs and not driving while impaired.
