For the second consecutive Sunday, fire crews were called to Our Lady, Star of the Sea church in Marblehead, Massachusetts, where a fire was reported during the 11 a.m. mass. The state police have confirmed their response to the incident, which caused attendees to evacuate the premises as a precaution. According to Father Tim Moran, smoke was detected and the smoke detectors were activated, prompting the services to be halted and investigations to commence. "There was some indication of smoke and we are investigating. As a precaution, we asked everyone to leave," Father Moran stated in a report by WCVB.
While there was no physical damage to the church infrastructure, the recurring nature of these fires has unsettled the congregation. Speaking to the necessity of heightened security, one parishioner, who voiced their concern about safety during worship, said, "After all the stuff that has happened, they have to be cautious for people who could get hurt just going to Mass, and trying to pray," as noted by WCVB. Local fire investigators alongside the state Fire Marshall’s Office have joined forces to uncover the origins of these fires.
Remarks on the ongoing investigation were scant, with Marblehead Fire Chief Jason Gilliland stating, "I can’t comment on an active investigation," in an update given to Marblehead Current. The latest incident saw smoke quickly filling the sacristy, positioned at the back of the church, causing distressed attendees to cut short their morning mass and exit the building.
As these concerning events unfold, parishioners have been left seeking answers and security, hoping that the subsequent Sundays are not marked by the interruptions of formless threats that seem to lurk, unseen but felt, necessitating their departure from a house meant for peace and prayer.
