Travelers tired of the usual airport security lines might see relief starting next summer as Massport explores setting up a "remote terminal" far from the hustle of Logan Airport. According to The Boston Globe, this remote terminal would be located in Framingham, offering passengers the chance to bypass security at Logan by undergoing it at this outlying site before boarding a direct bus to the airport.
Massport CEO Rich Davey envisions this move to ease the often stressful journey to and through the airport. Stated in a meeting with Massport’s board of directors and in a conversation with the Boston.com, "We’re going to start small to see if we can get folks excited about it." Running every hour for a five-hour period each day, the buses aim to accommodate between 15 to 30 passengers who would reserve their tickets in advance, embarking them on a pilot program slated for next summer — if discussions with the TSA and subsequent approval proceed as hoped.
Reflecting on the projected efficiency of the pilot program, officials are considering the potential spread of this service to other Logan Express lots, including Braintree and Woburn. Davey commented on the ticket prices, reassuring that the cost would not surpass a regular Logan Express bus during the pilot phase, which currently stands at $9 online for a one-way trip from Framingham to Logan.
The concept is rooted in existing practices elsewhere, mirroring the services utilized by passengers moving from Atlantic City to Philadelphia International Airport. In a presentation detailed by CBS News Boston, Massport's initiative is not limited to any specific airline and does not involve private shuttles. The safety and security of the operation have been board members' concerns, with bags making the 22-mile journey, mostly along the Massachusetts Turnpike, from Framingham to Boston. "It really needs to be extremely thorough before we can even consider anything like that," Worcester County Sheriff Lew Evangelidis told board members.
With the remote security pilot program aiming at reducing not only the congestion at the airport but the environmental impact on the surrounding roads, Peter Howe, representative of Massport, shared at the board meeting, "The remote facility will allow passengers to arrive at a remote location, check their bags, go through TSA screening, and doing all of this even before departing for the airport," as mentioned in a report from CBS News Boston. As the proposal moves forward, the needs for passenger convenience and uncompromised security find themselves delicately balanced in Massport's hands, pending TSA's green light.
