Chaos erupted at a McDonald's in Hickory Hill when a man was severely injured in a drive-by shooting yesterday afternoon. The Memphis Police Department rushed to the scene at 6050 Winchester Road at approximately 3:12 p.m., as reported by FOX13 Memphis. Initial reports indicate the victim, a male McDonald's employee, was shot in the shoulder and was then transported to the hospital in critical condition, though he was later upgraded to non-critical condition.
According to WREG, a silver or gray Nissan may have driven by the popular fast-food restaurant, firing the shot that injured the employee. A witness described the harrowing moment, as three workers were on break when the incident occurred. "Three workers were outside and two ran back in and said that one of the workers got shot, and the other workers had ran outside to pick up the other worker and they brought him back in the McDonald’s and took him to the back," the witness, who chose to remain anonymous, told WREG.
The aftermath of the shooting left employees locked inside the McDonald's while police scoured the area. A young man, observed to have a gun, was chased down at a nearby park. This individual did not appear to be the same person who was placed in the back of a squad car as witnessed by cameras. Deborah Parker, an eyewitness to the chase, recounted her fear to WREG reporters. "He had it his hand when he was running, and I was scared that he was going to reach back and shoot the officer that was chasing him, and I was like, ‘He got a gun, he got a gun!'" said Parker.
While the police have not yet detained anyone in connection with the shooting, one male was briefly held but subsequently released. The investigation continues as family members of McDonald's employees and customers seek to understand the full scope of the day's events.
