Residents of Mecklenburg County are getting a healthy push from local public health officials with the launch of MeckMoves, a 16-week fitness challenge aiming to stir up physical activity across the region. The initiative, as reported by Mecklenburg County Public Health, is set to kickstart on October 11th with a free health screening event dubbed MeckCheck, at the McCrorey YMCA from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
In a bid to grip and improve community health, MeckMoves invites anyone over the age of 18 to participate free of charge. As detailed by Dr. Kimberly Scott, assistant health director for population health, “We’re excited to kick off this new initiative to improve health in our community through physical activity.” To be eligible, residents need to first make a stop at MeckCheck for screenings ranging from blood pressure to body mass index assessments, as per Mecklenburg County's release.
MeckCheck isn't just a routine walk-in for health measurements; it's an interactive gig with educational pop-up stations, fitness demos, and other engaging health resources. It’s an environment designed not only to inform but also to encourage residents to take those first steps toward a more active and healthier lifestyle.
Reams of research delineate the benefits of regular physical activity: staving off diseases, bolstering bones, and elevating mental wellness. MeckMoves aims to significantly reduce the risk of chronic ailments like heart disease and type 2 diabetes, "We know that exercise has several physical and mental health benefits, so we are challenging our community to join us to step into better health," Dr. Scott told Mecklenburg County Public Health.
