"Preparedness does start at home," Col. James F. Grady II, director of the MSP, hath to said, per Michigan State Police. Acknowledging the harsh lessons taught by severe weather and unexpected emergencies, he highlights the intrinsic value of laying plans in advance, such as devising a family strategy and assembling emergency kits. Taking these rudimentary steps, he contends, could spell the difference when moments are all you've got.
In an echo of this sentiment, the Michigan State Police, Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (MSP/EMHSD) encourages residents to arm themselves with knowledge of potential emergencies and to devise appropriate responses. A collaborative effort involving numerous state agencies is emphasizing the "Preparedness Starts at Home" theme. Part of this effort, Tim Boring, director of MDARD, underscores the necessity of including animals in such preparatory measures, advocating for go-kits replete with pet sustenance and ID tagging or microchipping.
Adding a practical dimension to the campaign, the MSP/EMHSD, in concert with Muskegon County, is stepping out to arrange the 2025 Prepare Fair. Set against the scenic backdrop of Heritage Landing, this educational event aims to school attendees on emergency adaptation. Slated for the twilight hours of September 30th, from 4 to 7 p.m., this no-cost event presents a unique opportunity for families to engage with first responders and volunteers, to glean critical insights into emergency planning and preparedness kit assembly.
