The Milton Equestrian Committee (MEC) is saddling up for what could be a pivotal meeting on incentivizing "large lot" ownership – we're talking 3 acres or more. According to the City of Milton's recent announcement, this meeting tomorrow is the final one scheduled to discuss proposals that may encourage property owners to maintain or expand their sizable spreads. Interested parties can watch the deliberations themselves beginning at 6:30 p.m. in City Hall's Council Chambers or catch the livestream.
Among the sweeteners on the table are faster approvals for home-based businesses flourishing within accessory structures on these generous parcels and the easier establishment of covered riding arenas, particularly on tracts surpassing 10 acres, however, also up for consideration is the elimination of tax occupational certificate fees for commercial horse farms and there's a push for more flexibility around property access points. It appears the members, appointed by the City's Mayor and Council, are keen to preserve the rustic charm and scenic expanses that define Milton's character.
If you can't make it to the meeting, you won't be out of the loop for long. City staff plan to collect all of MEC's recommendations post-meeting and present them to the City Council this autumn, ensuring the proposals get trotted out before the policymakers who can turn them into action.
But it's not all business; the committee will also gallop into discussions about "Meet the Neighbors" – a celebration of equestrian culture that was rained out last year the event which is open to everyone will aim to set a date for its 2026 return, featuring an array of vendors, activities, and a chance for Milton's horse enthusiasts to mingle. MEC's next meeting, where additional discussions might occur, is pegged for October 15.
